4 Things To Know About Aluminum Glazing for Windows

Have you heard the term window glazing? While this may sound like a treatment applied to the glass, it’s actually a term that refers to the number of pieces of glass in a window or the putty used to secure a new glass pane into an existing frame. The type of window glazing you choose can affect performance and energy efficiency. Let’s look at some things you should know about window glazing before you decide on an aluminum window design for your new or existing building.

What is Window Glazing?

Window glazing can mean two things, depending on what's done to the glass or the number of panes in the window. For example, if an installer is talking about single-glazed glass, they are describing a window with one pane of glass. If someone says they will glaze a window, they’re installing glass into a window frame. If they’re reglazing a window, they are replacing the glass.

The term window glazing can also refer to the putty used to secure the glass in the window frame. For example, if someone says they are using window glazing, they’re using a compound that secures the glass inside the frame.

What are aluminum glazed windows?

When we talk about aluminum glazed windows, we are typically referring to the number of panes of glass within an aluminum window frame, including:

  • Single-Glazed – The window has one pane of glass. These windows can be found in older homes and offer limited energy efficiency. For that reason, they’re not typically installed new.
  • Double-Glazed – The window has two panes of glass. This is the most common type of window installed and offers decent energy efficiency, especially when combined with a Low E coating. Argon gas is often used to fill the space between the two panes of glass to improve the thermal efficiency even more.
  • Triple-Glazed – The window has three panes of glass and offers the best energy efficiency of the three types, especially when used in combination with 2 Low E coatings. Like double-glazed windows, these windows also have argon gas between the panes.

Choosing the Right Window Glazing for Your Residential or Commercial Building

Choosing the right type of window glazing can improve thermal efficiency, increase weather protection and security, and lower the amount of outdoor noise heard indoors.

1. Improve Noise Levels

When choosing the glazing for your windows or doors, consider the Sound Transmission Class (STC) rating, which provides a decibel measurement for how much noise is stopped. For various building materials, STC ratings typically range from 15 to 36, with a higher number indicating that more noise is suppressed.

  • Single-Glazed - 15-21
  • Double-Glazed - 25-27 Double Glazed - 32-42
  • Triple-Glazed – 25-31 Triple Glazed - 36-46

If more soundproofing is needed, it is possible to purchase soundproofed windows or windows with thicker glass. Additionally, ensuring the windows are installed correctly with no gaps between the window and the frame can reduce noise levels.

2. Increase Security

If you’re worried about someone breaking your windows to gain unauthorized access to your building, you may want to consider installing double or triple-glazed glass. It’s harder to break multiple panes of glass, which can be a deterrent to potential criminals. Tempered glass is 4 times stronger than annealed and using a combination of laminated in your double or triple glazing, would be the best choice for security.

3. Improve Thermal Efficiency

Double and triple-glazed windows provide better thermal efficiency regarding heat transfer than single-glazed windows, which is especially important if you’re looking to perform a more sustainable renovation on your home or business. The glass is hermetically sealed, and the argon gas between the panes acts as an insulator. If you’re looking for even better thermal efficiency, consider adding a Low-E coating, which lowers the U-factor and can help decrease energy loss between 30% and 50%.

4. Improve Seal and Water-tightness

Along with proper installation, choosing the right glazing can improve the seal of the windows and their water tightness. At Reynaers Aluminum, we offer several levels of insulation for all our windows, including:

  • High-Insulating (Slimline 38) – Multi-pane window units, typically designed to open inward and offer excellent weather sealing and water-tightness. NFRC u-values for double glazing down to 0.28 Btu/hr∙ft²∙°F for fixed frames and down to 0.3 Btu/hr∙ft²∙°F for inswing windows and 0.35 Btu/hr∙ft²∙°F for doors.

  • Super High Insulating (Masterline 8) – The Masterline 8 series of windows offers excellent performance and fast production speed, while maximizing the amount allowed indoors and reducing thermal transfer. NFRC u-values for double glazing down to 0.28 Btu/hr∙ft²∙°F for fixed frames and down to 0.3 Btu/hr∙ft²∙°F for doors.

  • Passive House (Masterline 10) – These windows are certified passive house and provide both thermal efficiency and security. NFRC u-values for triple glazing down to 0.15 Btu/hr∙ft²∙°F for fixed frames and down to 0.17 Btu/hr∙ft²∙°F for inswing windows and doors.
